For so long, here at the-sports-buff.com, we have been staunch defenders of the Pakistan cricket captain, but after the 2-1 ODI series loss to New Zealand, although we don’t agree with it, we concede Babar’s future could be a talking point.
Having lost the test series to New Zealand, fans of the Pakistan cricket team would have been hoping that their team win the ODI series. If the men in green had won this series 3-0, they would have been the number one side in the world, but that wouldn’t have reflected the Babar’s Pakistan team of current.
They’re not a bad side, they’re not, but some important areas in their team makeup need addressing. I hate the concept, but a finisher is needed. Something like how Glen Philipps is for New Zealand.
Philips was the difference as he was able to construct an innings that took the game away from the home side.
Pakistan did have a finisher in Mohammed Asif and also one in Khushdil Shah, but in the case of Asif, his form fell off a cliff and Khushdil, to simply put it got found out a bit as he was not so destructive when sides took the pace off the ball.
Iftikhar Ahmed has also been tried in the role but to no avail. Don’t get this mistaken, we are a fan of Babar Azam, but the nature of sport will mean the wolves will be out to hunt Babar out of his role as skipper.
Are there other candidates? Yes, such as Shadab Khan, but overreaction, theatre is the worst thing that can be done here. Babar has given many chances to different players, Pakistan’s side is a young one.
Time is needed. As mentioned in other writings, Pakistan are a side close to something beautiful, getting rid of the captain will put the team back, not months, years!
There’s a 50-over World Cup to prepare for PCB, never mind looking at a change of captain. Make sure the team has all the tools to succeed, which it doesn’t. If something is wrong, this is where the coach is needed, to guide Babar.
He’s a learning captain. A semi-final and a final in two additions of the T20 World Cup aren’t to be snuffed at. Progress is being made. Armchair critics take a break.
