Life of Pandya

It’s been an amazing 12-18 months for Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandiya on a personal level. First, the 29-year-old won the IPL title with the newly formed franchise the Gujarat Titans and he did so as team skipper.

There were some good players in that side such as Shubman Gill, Matthew Wade and Rashid khan amongst others, but it was the leadership style of Pandiya that stood out.

Some brilliant captains such as Virat Kohli and to a point Rohit Sharma, who has been more animated as a captain than I have ever seen them. Hardik Pandya would be just that bit more level-headed than the two great leaders he’s played under.

The Titans had a good team spirit whenever they played last year. In part, a big part that’s thanks to their talismanic all-rounder Pandya who’s also captain, Hardik led from the front some brilliant individual performances with bat and ball.

Former Mumbai Indian all-rounder who from what I am aware didn’t have too much leadership experience, but credit to him he’s taken captaincy like a duck has to water.

Hardik’s success in the limited-overs as a player has been clear for all to see, but as a captain last season it hasn’t gone unnoticed either. India have now looked at the former Mumbai Indian to help be the face of a transition period for the two-time 50-over World Cup winners.

Pandiya stepping in for the normal leaders in the team, impressed as his side won against New Zealand in a series whitewash. Hardik has some exceptionally good players at his disposal to help India get back into being a competitive side.

A side of India’s quality had a really poor 2022, India’s fans won’t accept this lying down and neither would the team management. Maybe appointing Pandya as captain, but there is one issue, age.

Hardik is a similar age to current vice-captain KL Rahul. Why this is relevant? Well, it represents mid to short-term thinking for the BCCI. One thing I can say for sure is, Pandya has impressed as a captain.

I have also said KL Rahul has shown himself to be a good captain too. News confirmed just yesterday that Pandya is now vice-captain in ODI and T20, it appears only a matter of time before he’s named captain of the T20 side.

We will bring you the news as we get it.
