This week saw the return of domestic football across Europe. From the Copa del Rey in Spain to the Carabao Cup in England. One thing is for sure, World Cup fever is still here on our website that’s for sure.
Nothing lasts forever and normal football was going to need to resume eventually. In England, there were some Carabao Cup matches to settle where the winners would go through to the quarter-finals.
For the neutral and the cup romantic, there were no upsets of sorts except for the Charlton game. Manchester City, Manchester United, Leicester and Newcastle are amongst the other sides going through.
The Addicks overcame Premier League side Brighton, but they needed penalties to progress, they won 4-3 on penalties. In the tie of the round on paper, which saw Liverpool travel to Manchester City, that saw a classic.
When those two play, it usually produces goals and yesterday evening didn’t disappoint, there were five in all. Manchester City who fielded something closer to their strongest side, came out on top, having lead twice before that. City’s reward for winning this heavy-weight clash? A tough trip to St Mary’s awaits.
Cross-city rivals Manchester United host Charlton. With the greatest respect to the other sides, except for Man City, then The Red Devils should fancy their chances of maybe going all the way in this tournament.
The Quarter-finals will commence on the week commencing 9th January.
Full quarter-final draw
