Kane Williamson stands down as test captain

He’s seen as the Mr Nice Guy of cricket, and with good reason too. That Mr Nice Guy I refer to (Kane Williamson the New Zealand captain), has announced he is stepping down as captain of the test side.

In news which has no doubt shocked the cricket community, we here at the-sports-buff.com have been taken a bit by surprise too. Tim Southee who has been acting captain for The Black Caps in parts this year comes in to replace him.

Under Williamson, New Zealand did win the inaugural World Test Championship, where they beat India in the final. This time round though the 2019 World Cup finalists are already out of contention for reaching another final.

The choice of replacing Williamson with Southee has surprised us as Tom Latham, who has stepped in for the now-former skipper, may have seemed a natural choice.

One thing that Tim Southee’s appointment does is keep up the recent trend of teams of having a fast bowler as a captain. Tim, joins Messrs Bumrah and Cummins, although Jasprit filled in for just one test for India.

Currently ranked number six in the World Test batting rankings, Williamson scored 3,331 runs as captain at an average of 57.43 – the highest of any New Zealand captain.

Although still young at 32, Kane Williamson’s decision is arguably one which will help him focus solely on his batting. He remains captain of the ODI and T20 sides.

Fast bowler Southee, 34, has represented the Black Caps on 346 occasions, so comes with experience and leadership experience too as he has led the T20 side 22 times.

He will become New Zealand’s 31st Test captain when they begin their tour of Pakistan on Boxing Day, which consists of two Tests, three ODIs and five T20s.

We wish him the best of luck, and he will have the help of Williamson too, but no doubt Tim Southee will want to be his own style of captain. But my o my, does he have massive shoes to fill.

Which is the same thing I said when Williamson took over from Brendan McCullum.
