They were too old – the Dad’s army, but sadly for Indian cricket, they have reached a new low, after suffering an ODI series defeat to Bangladesh.
With the greatest respect to The Tigers, although they’re very capable of achieving some superb wins, they still have to qualify alongside the associate nations.
Having said that, they have the talented Liton Das in their ranks, who in the T20 World Cup, pushed his side to within touching distance of a famous win. Controversially, Bangladesh would fall short, owing to the D/L method.
In this ODI series, Bangladesh have been well worth their series win. In the first game, all be it in thrilling circumstances (a last-gasp one-wicket win), Das’ men did well to restrict their illustrious hosts to just 186.
Although they had to use all their batsmen to get over the line, get over the line they did. In the second game, India who were licking their wounds did put Bangladesh in deep trouble at 69-6.
To their credit, The Tigers rallied thanks to Mahmudullah (77) and Mehedi Hasan (100 not out) to get to a very credible 271-7. Bangladesh’s score would prove to be a winning one as India in reply would fall short by five runs.
This was despite Shreyas Iyer’s 82, Axar Patel’s 56 and captain Rohit Sharma’s 51 off just 28 balls, which was achieved with an injured finger. This was a much-changed Indian side, but sadly for them, they suffered two defeats.
The easiest reaction is to do a knee-jerk reaction. The players who have come in are not good enough we need to drop them. Rahul Dravid and Rohit, me, Ayyaz Malik a passionate cricket fan is pleading with you to please blood new players.
In this series, you have made some form of effort to do that. Now you have, please be patient. Big calls will need to be made, and those big calls I am afraid revolve around the futures of Messrs Rahul and Dhawan.
I never knew being spoilt for choice was a bad thing. With the Indian cricket team, the squad of current it appears it can be. They will come bouncing back though, they always do.
