The grim reaper hasn’t come and there’s no big funeral ceremony, with a national state of mourning, but there feels like there has been a death in the family. The death of football.
Football, the beautiful game brings emotions out of the mere mortal, that sometimes one didn’t know they had in them. From the time, when the football fan morphed into an F-bomb trooper for example as explained here; https://the-sports-buff.com/2021/10/07/the-types-of-sports-fans/.
Or there is an emotional fan, who wept more tears than someone who watched Bridgette Jones’ diary. Here though, in this article, we are going to reflect a more frustrated mood.
Football isn’t dead of course, but the soul of football is in danger. I wish I was being mellow dramatic, but I am not. In this year’s World Cup, there have been many 0-0 draws, yes, but there have also been many shock upsets.
What there has also been is a lot of goals chalked off for offside. This is a problem, as the Premier League has shown. Fewer goals, less excitement, less excitement and less excitement means? Less engagement!
Football’s mere existence in this modern era, is I am sorry to say due to the financial support it gets. The Premier League realised this, that ruling goals for offside, which were very marginal, was upsetting the fans, the paying customer!
This season, the instruction has been to give the benefit to the attacker in marginal offside decisions, a concession that the over the top offside rule was wrong.
The ongoing Qatar World Cup has been overshadowed by politics which has seen people stay away from the tournament, so the last thing organisers would want is to ruin the spectacle for something as trivial as this.
FIFA, take note and do the right thing. The English Premier League have, and I argue it was one of the best decisions they ever made. Sport is evolving, so despite my opposition to VAR, sport, which includes football need change.
Will the changes help or hinder football? Well, this is up to FIFA and the football powers that be.
