A word of caution Nathan

Hello good morning sports fans, it’s me Ayyaz Malik aka The Sports Buff. I hope you’re well, looking after yourself and are in good health. We need to talk about sports, in particular football managers.
The life of a football player is very glamourized, and of course, a Premier League player, they are paid handsomely. As for a football manager, yes they too do get rewarded financially, but there is a lot more stress involved.

Win and the players are brilliant and world beaters, lose and it’s the manager’s fault as it’s his fault those players are not performing. One of those managers who was the victim of his players not being able to perform at the desired level was Nathan Jones, who was reappointed as Luton Town’s manager in 2020.

In the Welshman’s first spell from 2016-2019, the 49-year-old Jones oversaw The Hatters getting two promotions, which saw Luton competing in the Championship.

Nathan Jones was able to bring some stability to Luton Town and kept them in the league in his first season back. His Luton side would cruelly get beaten in the play-off semi-final stage to Huddersfield, last season.

Sports fans, this same Nathan Jones, who has enjoyed success with
Championship side Luton, due to his good work with The Hatters, has been linked with the vacant role at Premier League side Southampton.

Jones was in the stands for last night’s Carabao Cup game with Sheffield Wednesday, which would seem to suggest the Luton manager’s appointment seems imminent.

Former manager Ralph Hassenhuttl, who was at St Mary’s for four years, worked minor miracles with limited resources, Nathan Jones bearing this in mind before taking the job.

The Welshman Jones, who struggled at Stoke, should think about a move away from Luton long and hard. The grass isn’t greener, as they say. In all honesty, as respectable of a job as Nathan Jones has done with Championship side Luton, I just don’t think he’s the right man for the job.

I would have liked someone like Ruben Amorim, maybe even Steven Gerrard to have been considered. Sorry Celtic fans, another manager who would have been good for Southampton is Ange Postecoglu.

The hierarchy at the South Coast club very rarely gets managerial appointments wrong, so Southampton fans, let’s hope I am wrong to be sceptical about Ralph Hassenhuttl.

Austrian manager, Hassenhuttl, formerly of RB Leipzig, where I feel he made his name, can deservedly recharge and consider his next managerial role in football.
