Super Cup, the glorified Charity Shield

Hello, and good afternoon sports fans, it’s me Ayyaz Malik aka The Sports Buff, I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and are in good health. I want to talk about sports, and to be precise, I want to talk about football, yesterday’s Super Cup to be specific.

I can assure you, even if my beloved Manchester United were playing in this tournament or for this trophy if you like, the Super Cup is a glorified version of the Charity Shield.

UEFA’S curtain raising event of the new season is a one-off match which of course sees the Champions League winners face the Europa League winners. This wasn’t the initial format of course as the winners of the Cup Winners Cup (now revamped to be the Europa Conference League) was the only was this cup could have any credibility.

The FA Cup for example has always been marketed it to us you could say as, a David vs Goliath, the big Premier League team against the lower league team, where on the day whoever wins, wins as it’s whoever is better on the day will come through.

This is how the Super Cup should be in my humble opinion. Teams complain about fixture congestion and this seems like another fixture. With respect to yesterday’s game, the Eintracht Frankfurt fans and their team got to play against Real Madrid.

It’s not every day the German side could say that. No, this does have more prestige than the Audi Cup (sorry Spurs fans). So is there a future for the Super Cup?

Yes, if it goes back to the traditional Champions League winners plays winners of the third European trophy (Conference League). So for example, with my logic, this year’s Super Cup should have been Real Madrid vs Roma.

With the greatest respect to Frankfurt, that would have been a box office of a game, even if it’s only an early season game. This is my two cents, but do you agree?
