Hello, good afternoon sports fan, it’s me Ayyaz Malik aka The Sports Buff, I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and are in good health. Let’s have a chat and in particular, let’s have a chat about Nottingham Forest.
East Midland side Forest, who will be returning to England’s top flight after a 23-year absence, have impressively gone about conducting their transfer business. Despite the two-time Champions League winners returning to the big time, via the play-offs, they have been one of the busiest of all Premier League clubs.
In total The Tricky Trees have spent £75 million, less than what Liverpool have spent on Darwin Nunez. As amazing as that fact is, I want to take a look at who they have signed. Jesse Lingard, Neco Williams, Dean Henderson and Omar Richards, who are the headline purchases, but I am sensing De Ja Vu.
De Ja Vu of who? Bolton Wanderers of course. Not the side of today, a side that impressively held it’s own in League One, no the side of the early 2000’s. Ivan Campo, Nicholas Anelka, Ivan Hierro, Jay-Jay Okocha were some of the stellar signings to play their football at the then called Reebok Stadium.
Stoke City came close to replicating the same kind of formula and did so with good success like Bolton did so famously under Big Sam, but now there’s another team doing the same? Step forward Nottingham Forest.
Steve Cooper’s side who were languishing near the bottom of the Championship before the former England Under-19 manager joined, has signed a mixture of players. Some have been signed domestically and some from abroad.
Although it maybe too early to draw such a comparison, sports fans don’t dismiss it off hand. James Garner and Djed Spence leaving will no doubt be huge voids to fill, but the players who Notts Forest have been brought in, deserves plaudits from the football community.
I am happy to say that after Nottingham Forest do sign Aaron Ramsey (it appears when not if), then this resemblance to Bolton and Stokes team of old will only be more obvious. Revisit this article in a few months if need be too.
