Exposed

England”s test cricket team has flaws. But they have won their last four tests, what do you mean The Sports Buff? Well sports fans, cricket fans, The Three Lions may have won four tests on the bounce, but they have been a tad fortunate.

Much has been made of the new coaching set-up of Ben Stokes as captain and Brendan McCullum as coach. As a player Baz (as he is also known) was very gun-ho in his approach, he went hell for leather every ball.

At times, England’s test team have adopted that approach, Stokes being the one getting caught out (no pun intended), the most by this approach. Touch players such as Joe Root have adopted an improvised scoring approach, the scoop comes to mind.

Then you have Jonny Bairstow, the wicket-keeper batsman who these days keeps his gloves firmly hung up. Yes, that’s right our Jonny has developed into a very nimble fielder who can be a valued member of the slips, but also a fielder with a bullet like throw, Bairstow’s safe hands (since he is a wicket-keeper by trade) is pretty much a given.

To discuss the issue at hand then, why I have tackled this discussion in this way and suggested that England have been exposed is that, on so many occasions in this supposed purple patch for Ben Stokes’ England side, on several occasions they would be five down with very little on the board.

Zak Crawley, largely has been a flop at the top of the order, with Alex Lees showing promise but not being able to truly go on and do so real damage just yet. Ollie Pope who has been shunned to number three, has been ok, but the Surrey man hasn’t batted there before, he deserves some slack getting cut.

Whatever the reason, England have time and time again been indebted to Bairstow and Root, who are trying their best to a good Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendaulkar impression in their prime.

In former captain Joe Root, you have a man who is batting like he is on a different planet at the moment. When one of these players or both of these get into a bad run of form, England could be skittled out for a low score, like they were against New Zealand in the first test of their test match series.

The signs are good for England, but the rest of the batting line-up needs to chip in, if they’re not able to help out Root and Bairstow, then this resurgence of England’s test team, that many are saying they’re going through, is a false dawn.
