Business 101: Property, Football and Selling the Grass Beneath Our Feet!

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Business 101!

Today’s lesson is all about property. And what you think you know about selling property might just be completely wrong.

Let’s take two of European football’s biggest clubs: FC Barcelona, the Catalan giants, and Manchester United, the Red Devils. Two massive clubs from their respective countries, with one or two things in common.

For starters, both can lay claim to being among the most successful teams in their respective countries. Another, rather less glamorous, commonality is that both clubs have found themselves dealing with substantial levels of debt.

Due to the rules and financial structures governing the English Premier League, Manchester United has been allowed to operate under a somewhat different model. Barcelona, meanwhile, has had its own financial challenges. But the bottom line is the same: both clubs need to manage their finances and reduce their debt.

Manchester United’s debt has been reported at around £1 billion, while Barcelona has also faced debt on a similar scale, depending on how it is calculated.

Now, when Barcelona’s stadium was undergoing redevelopment, reports emerged of the club selling seats from the stadium and hosting wedding functions there.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a football stadium doubling up as a wedding venue.

But, to be fair, hosting weddings at football grounds isn’t exactly a new phenomenon in England. The mighty Bolton Wanderers also host wedding celebrations at their stadium.

And given that the name of the stadium could change next week, we’ll simply refer to it as Bolton’s Stadium for now!

Now, just in case you haven’t heard today’s big news, Manchester United have reportedly been selling cubes of turf for £125. And apparently, they’ve sold out!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the modern property market.

When you think of property, you generally imagine a house. Four walls, windows, doors, perhaps a garage. Unless, of course, you’re in Beswick… sorry!

And if you’re living in one of the more affluent parts of Manchester, what I like to call the Costa Ashton del Sol, you might even get a conservatory thrown in for good measure.

But grass?

A square piece of grass for £125?

Well, I’ve spent years mowing my lawn, gathering the grass clippings, and throwing them into the garden bin. All those years, completely oblivious to the fact that I might have been sitting on a small fortune.

Forget £30. At £20 a square piece, I could have been running my own turf empire!

And my nephew… oh, my nephew!

All those pieces of turf you kicked out of the front garden while playing cricket. We could have auctioned them off!

Imagine the auctioneer:

“Ladies and gentlemen, up next, we have a square piece of grass, previously used by Ayyaz Malik, The Sports Buff, during a garden cricket match with his nephew.”

Do I hear £10? £15? £20?

Suddenly, that random patch of grass in my garden is looking rather appealing.

Who knew the property market could be so… grass-roots?
