Hello, good evening, sports fans. I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and in good health. We need to talk about football and, to be more precise, the transfer window- Arsenal’s transfer window.
For the champions of England, it has to be said it’s a poor window. If Tuesday 1st September hadn’t happened, one could argue it’s not that bad. Gunners fans, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
You’re short, just like Everton are short. The signing of Evri Konsa goes without saying: a good signing. Former Brentford defender Konsa has been signed to fill the void left by William Saliba.
The signing of Christos Tzolis looks like a very good one. Arsenal have a promising player on their hands, but after the sanctioned transfer of Gabriel Martinelli for a fee in the region of £60 million, the North London club look short.
On the left wing, only the Greek winger Tzolis plays there. Manager Mikel Arteta is, of course, a disciple of Pep Guardiola, who’s not averse to putting players out of their normally preferred position.
Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke can play there, but that would mean the need to cover the other side of the pitch, a position on the pitch they have been trying to address for a long time.
The club made failed bids for a series of players this window, including what turned out to be an embarrassing bid to Real Madrid for Vini Jnr. Yilmaz of Juventus was considered too, but ultimately nothing materialised.
If the window had ended then, maybe it would have been OK, but then The Gunners accepted a bid and sold Gabriel Matinelli. The fee for the Brazilian was £60 million.
Coupled with that, Gabriel Jesus, formerly of Manchester City, was sold to La Liga giants Barcelona. Now Arsenal have Kai Havertz and Victor Gyokeres as their two senior strikers, rather than three, when they could call upon Jesus too.
Are Premier League champions Arsenal going to struggle this season due to their transfer activity? It’s hard to say, but what I can say is that between them and Everton, it’s hard to say who has had a more disappointing window.
