Serbian legend Novak Djokovic is out of the US Open after a first-round defeat to Argentina’s Mariano Navone, which is probably the greatest win in his career. The 24-time Grand Slam winner, who was visibly emotional after his loss, was seen vomiting in a bin at a humid Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
The scorecard read 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. A very brave, valiant effort from one of the greatest to ever lift a racquet in this generation, but this possibly shiws that age waits for no one. To put this first-round loss into perspective, this is the first time that Novak has lost at this stage in a Grand Slam since 2006.
A lot has happened in the 20 years since, the boy from Belgrade matured into a man, one of the greatest to lift a racquet, not just this geneation, but in any generation.
Djokovic with 24 Grand Slams is two ahead of long-term rival Rafael Nadal (22), and four ahead of Swiss great Rodger Federer (20). If this is the end of Novak Djokocvic’s career, it’s not the way he would want to go out.
