Former ODI and T20 World Cup winners Pakistan have dropped seven players and dismissed head coach Sarfraz Ahmed in the midst of a test series. Ahmed, who won the Champions Trophy in 2017 as captain, also guided the under-19s to Asia Cup glory.
The former Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman has a lot of leadership pedigree, or so I thought, but it’s something the PCB agrees to disagree with.
Five of the players dropped – Muhammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman and Khurram Shahzad – have featured in the series so far, while Aamir Jamal and Muhammad Awais Jafar have been sent home without playing.
Ali Agha’s drop is surprising, considering he led the side in regular skipper Babar Azam’s absence.
Spin-bowling all-rounder Arafat Minhas, left-arm seamer Mohammed Imran Jr, wicketkeeper Said Baig and all-rounders Mohammad Imran and Razaullah have all received call-ups.
They are joined by Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who impressed in a recent series with Bangladesh. As cricket fans, we’re used to Pakistan’s team taking drastic steps after defeats.
Cricket fans, this will take some topping of crazy and bizarre decisions. White ball coach Mike Hesson will lead the side in the interim period at least.
