After a record-breaking summer last term, 20-time Premier League winners Liverpool have had a much more understated window this term. Jeremy Jacquet, who was signed as part of a pre-contract agreement, has been signed to shore up the defence.

The other addition has been of highly rated Spaniard Victor Munoz from Osasuna for a fee in the region of £34.5 million. Those two signings still see The Reds with a £94.5 million net spend.

The signing of a centre-back is needed, and the youngster from Rennes promises to be a quality addition over time, but it’s the recent and latest addition that’s got me, as a football writer, a bit excited.

Usually when one gets excited with a new signing, it’s an attacking player. Think Luis Suarez; in time for the 2013 season, he was sensational! I am talking of a Uruguayan, funnily enough, Suarez’s countryman Ronald Araujo, the 27-year-old who is playing his trade with Spanish champions Barcelona.

After losing his place to Pau Cubarsi and Gerrard Martin. The deal for Uruguayan Araujo is a loan deal, with an option for a £47.14 million switch to the six-time Champions League winners.

If the deal goes well, Liverpool have some much-needed protection at the back and an Ibrahima Konate replacement.

The Barca academy product, has excellent reading of the game and possesses similar strengths of former Liverpool centre-back Konate.

Araujo just like the recently signed Real Madrid centre-back is quick, strong and excellent in the air.

If this move doesn’t work, it will allow them to reassess the market in 12 months’ time, which isn’t always a bad thing.
