As the dust settles on Florentino Perez winning the election, Real Madrid and their recruitment network have started the work of rebuilding the team, and it most certainly needs a rebuild.

It’s not too long ago that I described Real in the process of making a Junior Galactico team, and that, if I may say so myself, is an accurate observation. A young Jude Bellingham was signed, as well as Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Mbappe.

With the example of Kylian Mbappe, maybe the French captain was a bit more of an established star. Inevitably, the old guard, such as Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Dani Carvajal, were gonna have to either move on or retire, and replacements would be needed.

Naive maybe, but the reinforcements that they had in the middle of the park and with Vini JR and Rodrygo outside should have meant Real were sorted for the next decade, but how wrong I am and some of my colleagues in the sports writing world too, no doubt.

Los Blancos, who have been trophyless in the last two seasons, appear to lack direction and leadership. With leadership, that can bring direction, which the appointment of Jose Mourinho will.

Prime Jose brought trophies to a club. People are quick to bash this version of The Special One, but he will make them hard to beat. Maybe he is a high-end fireman putting out a fire, but the situation at The Bernabéu was flammable.

Vini Junior clearly undermined Real legend Xabi Alonso, and it appeared Les Bleus captain Mbappe was at odds with outgoing coach Alvaro Arbeloa. This won’t happen with Jose, and if anyone dares to try, you know from the start they aren’t playing.

This is the same Jose Mourinho who benched Real Madrid club legend Iker Casillas, so try him at your peril. With the signings of Ibrahima Konate all but confirmed, as well as Denzel Dumfries, the back-line will have a different feel to it.

Not forgetting the imminent deal to bring Marc Cucurella to Los Blancos, too, means that Real will have an experienced player in Konate to partner Dean Huijsen, who had a real transition period, settling into life in the Spanish capital after moving from Bournemouth.

In midfield, Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva is expected to join, after long being linked with Rivals Barcelona. Granted, it’s not the vibrant young team that Ancelotti enjoyed, but in this situation, for the time being at least, it’s what needs must.

What Jose is bringing is maybe not flair-filled editions, but he’s bringing some steel to Real Madrid, much-needed steel. Los Blancos were too soft; they got bullied almost, but not now, because Jose is back.
