After agonisingly finishing second, Hearts of Midlothian will start next season two key people down. The first is star striker Lawrence Shankland, who agreed to join Glasgow Rangers several weeks before the start of the World Cup.
The second was Derek McInnes, the man who led them to a close second-place finish. The 55-year-old has agreed to replace Danny Rohl, who has agreed to join Red Bull Salzburg.
Former Rangers player McInnes was approached to take over at Rangers in the past, but at the time, he turned down the advances of the Gers. A near decade on, the former midfielder hasn’t had it in him to say no twice.
Both men will be a massive loss to Hearts. The Edinburgh side stuttered badly during the time that their then captain Shankland was out injured, but when he did come back, they seemed really rejuvenated.
With Brighton owner Tony Bloom overseeing operations in the capital, I have no doubt that they have a succession plan in place to address the two key departures that we have mentioned.
