Fresh off the back of seeing their rivals Celtic win a 56th domestic title, Rangers have arguably made the best signing of the Scottish Premiership window by signing Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland on an initial two-year deal, for an undisclosed fee.

The signing of the former Ayr and Dundee hitman is crucial, as it addresses some of their issues last term. Yusuf Chemriti did impress in patches for The Gers, but the Portuguese Under-21 hitman struggled for consistency.

Chemriti wasn’t the only one to struggle; several of Rangers’ attacking players blew hot and cold. Larence Shankland’s signing could be crucial for several reasons. One is for leadership, which Danny Rohl’s men badly needed towards the end of the season, when they were going through their slump.

The other reason is, of course, the goals that he would bring. When Shankland was injured, it can be argued that this is what allowed Celtic back into the title race. The signing of the Hearts captain alone won’t guarantee a title, but it should make them challenge for longer in the season.
