It’s amazing what a bit of confidence can do a sportman. From your Lionel Messi to Victor Gyokoroes, to Durham batsmen Emilio Gray. In the case of all of these sports stars and other players not mentioned, they turn into world beaters.

The same can be said of Pakistan batsmen Babar Azam. It was barely three months ago and several members of the cricket community felt that Pakistan’s most celebrated player in the modern era, is past his sell by date.

For those of you who are aware I have rubbished such a notion a long time ago. there was a game against South Africa at The Wanderers a few years ago where Babar, accompanied by Rizwan put The Proteas’ attack to the sword and helped a big target look like a modest one to chase.

Mohammed Rizwan and Babar, ended up chgasing the score down at a canter. In life, it’s not where you begin, it’s where you end up. With that in mind, I am not sure why the cricket world would lose their mind over Babar’s strike-rate.

Other batsmen do have a strike-rate of 160, but in the Pakistan team for example, I don’t think there is anyone. With that in mind, Babar Azam’s role of consolidating his innings seems foolish on the face of it. In reality, it’s man very confident in his own game.

I am sure there will be people, with admiring glances at the ex-Pakistan captain this season, due to his blistering form in this year’s PSL. Personally, it’s not surprising that the 31-year-old is performing as well as he is. At Peshawar Zalmi they have the right tools for Babar to succeed.

In Mohammed Harris, they have an explosibve opener, which gives time for Babar to settle in. Other players like Michael Bracewell, Kussal Mendis who’s been outstanding this year.

To single out the Sri Lankan, as well as he has has been playing won’t do Aaron Hardie justice, Iftikhar Ahmed justice, or Farhan Yousuf’s talent justice either.

Simply put, even great players need a supporting cast and when the director get the supporting cast right, then the star of the show can do what he does best and that’s to be the star.
