After a decade of success, Andy Robertson, one of the very few surviving members of the successful Liverpool squad, will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
The Scotland captain follows in the footsteps of Egypt captain and teammate Mohammed Salah in leaving the club. Robertson’s departure signifies something of a transitional period for The Reds.
Other clubs have gone through this period in the past, and so did Liverpool when former manager Jurgen Klopp joined the club. Fast forward 10 years, and Liverpool are at the same junction that they were before.
Despite Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk still being at the club, bluntly, their days are numbered. Why? Well, it’s clear why, they’re just not good enough, their performances, and in the case of Alisson Becker, injury record prove it.
As I was typing this, I was adamant that Michael Olisse is the best player to replace Mohammed Salah, not just because the French starlet has been superb for Bayern Munich in goal scoring and assisting, but the fact that the former Palace jinx past defenders like Salah does and arrows shots with his left into the goalkeeper’s top right corner like the Egyptian King does.
Olise is the closest man, like-for-like, to replace The Egyptian King, but even if Bayern were to consider a sale, he won’t come cheap. The Bavarians paid £65 million for him.
Another player would have been Antoine Semenyo, but just like Marc Guehi, he opted for Man City. I am sure there are other players who will emerge who could fill the place of Mohammed Salah.
Just like 10 years ago, Liverpool managed to find the solutions to replacing ageing stars; life has come back full circle.
