Despite how talented someone is, even if they are over the age of 30, you don’t offer them a bumper contract. The first example of this was then striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The football world was in a frenzy over how well the Gabonese striker was doing, so he got a new long-term deal off the back of his good season and good form. I advised that caution is needed. That opinion, I feel like, it put in the minority of football fans.

Ronaldo and Messi in the African form is here, but what happened was almost like a prophecy from yours truly. Two, maybe even fewer than two years into the deal, Auba’s form dipped massively and in the end, he ended up being shipped to Barcelona.

Aubameyang was a shadow of that player. I argue that a deal should have been offered with more realistic terms. History has repeated itself, but this time it’s in Merseyside. Egyptian forward Mohammed Salah has announced he’s leaving the club at the end of the season.

Upon hearing the news, the football community were climbing over each other to pay tribute to the former Basel, Fiorentina, Chelsea and Roma attacker. Salah has broken many records; he deserves his flowers, but what I will also say is that, just like every other football player, he will have a decline.

Messi and Ronaldo aside, no football player has escaped getting old, where their bodies feel the toll of many years of playing. Mohammed Salah has had an excellent time of it in Merseyside, at Anfield, but to offer him such a deal, which dwarfs the other players’ wages?

For a club as well-run as Liverpool, as shrewd as they are, I find it mind-boggling. Congrats on a wonderful career at Anfield, Mohammed. You will be missed and hard to replace.
