Former South African opener Gary Kirsten has been named as the new head coach of the 1996 ODI World champions, Sri Lanka. Kirsten has a wealth of experience at this level and won the 2011 World Cup with India.
Gary Kirsten has had some setbacks in his career; his time with the Asian side Pakistan was a tough period, but with all due respect, many elite coaches have struggled in that particular role.
Jason Gillespie, another well-respected coach in the game, struggled whilst in charge of the 2009 T20 World Cup winners. Kirsten has been appointed in place of Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya, who announced he will be standing down after the now-concluded World Cup.
Gary Kirsten, 58, was working as an advisor for Namibia’s World Cup team. As a player, the South African was one of the best in his era, and as a coach, too, he’s been making quite a name for himself.
Sri Lanka have a very talented side, and they will be hoping that Gary Kirsten.
