Good evening, sports fans, football fans. The title isn’t a typo. The mighty Tottenham Hotspur, League champions of 1961, Europa League winners of last term, are very much in a relegation battle.
How did it get to this? It’s hard to say exactly, but last season, The Lillywhites were dreadful in the League, but had enough in the Europa to defeat former winners Manchester United in one of the most dullest finals I had ever seen.
That poor season last season cost Ange Postecoglou his job. Then chairman Daniel Levy mercilessly wielded the axe on a trophy-winning manager and that was that of Big Ange.
The official line was that Tottenham appointed Thomas Frank as they wanted to be more competitive in the Premier League, which is laughable. Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are not all of a sudden put their reserve sides in the Premier League.
Spurs had their work cut out; the only person who couldn’t see that was Mr Levy. Two seasons of seriously flirting with relegation can’t be the manager’s fault. You got rid of the problem (the manager), in your eyes, but guess what? The issue is still there!
It’s not just still there; the issue has magnified and got worse. Tottenham had a cut, yes, but the cut has been allowed to grow. The plaster of a new manager won’t stem the bleeding; in fact, there’s more blood now.
Tonight’s defeat to rivals Crystal Palace should be a wake-up call. Reportedly, Pakistan’s cricket players are getting fined for bad performances; Tottenham should look to do the same.
It’s a squad jam-packed with internationals, I can’t fathom how Spurs are staring at the drop. What makes this worse is that Arsenal, their bitter rivals, seem set to end their Premier League trophy drought and win their first League title since 2004.
The only saving grace for Tottenham is that, they’re fighitng to avoid taking the final relegation alongisde Forest and The Hammers. Tottenham Hotspur have been bad, but there are at least two other teams who have been just bad.
If Tottenham do the unthikable and get relegated, it’s worth baring in mind taht
