BetMGM Premier League Darts returned as Newcastle had the pleasure of hosting the first night at the Utilita Arena.
Each six-leg contest gave a lot for the fans to cheer for as plenty of action-packed matches took place on the oche.
The first quarter-final matchup was Jonny Clayton vs Josh Rock which saw the Welshman have an incredible performance to win 6-2 after averaging 109.81.
The following match then saw a repeat of the World Championship final with the reigning champion getting knocked out as Gian van Veen defeated Luke Littler 6-4.
A super close clash occurred between Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price as ‘Cool Hand’ triumphed 6-5, despite ‘The Iceman’ having a chance to steal the win.
Stephen Bunting did get off to a good start in the quarter-final, but Michael van Gerwen came back to win 6-2 on proceed to the next stage of the night.
In the first semi-final, Clayton came close to coming back after being 5-2 down, but the 23-year-old did not want to bottle his lead and won 6-4.
‘The Green Machine’ put on another convincing display when he defeated Humphries 6-2 to create an all-Dutch final.
Van Veen contested very well against his fellow Netherlands dart player, but MVG was better on the night, securing a 6-4 victory to become the league leader.
Last year, van Gerwen did not win a single night in the Premier League, but now he’s triumphed in the opening night, it could be a promising feeling for the seven time champion.
As for ‘The Giant’, it’s a good start in his debut campaign in the competition as he sits second place and aims for a spot in the top four by the final night.
