World number one Carlos Alcaraz reached the Australian Open final in unbelievable circumstances, winning his semi-final with Germany’s Alexander Zverev in five sets.

It started off easily enough for Alcaraz as he went into a two-set lead. At that point, there only seemed to be one winner, but inexplicably, the 22-year-old Alcaraz’s body gave up on him and from there on in, it was a battle of mental and even physical strength.

Medical time-outs were called as the trainer came onto the court, which no doubt took some of the sting out of Zverev’s charge. Despite that, the three-time semi-finalist managed to peg back Alcaraz and level the match at 2-2.

An early break in the fifth for the German appeared to surely grant Alexander Zverev a route back into the match.
