The third round of the most historic competition always brings some shocks and surprises, but the biggest upset in FA Cup history recently occurred at the Leasing.com Stadium.
National League North side, Macclesfield FC, progressed to this stage after beating against AFC Totton in the first round and Slough Town in the second.
Crystal Palace currently sit 13th in the Premier League and had the job of remaining as reining champions after winning the FA Cup Final against Manchester City last season.
While The Eagles sat 117 places above The Silkmen in the table, the underdogs always seem to have a favourable advantage in this tournament, especially in home territory.
Towards the end of the first half, Macclesfield had a free-kick from a reasonable distance away from Crystal Palace’s box.
Luke Duffy’s cross found team-mate Paul Dawson who headered in the lead after adjusting his head bandage before the set-piece.
A 1-0 lead was good, but it would only get better in the second half when James Edmondson’s deflected shot fell into the path of Isaac Buckley-Ricketts.
The former Manchester City academy player flicked the ball past Walter Daniel Benitez as it trickled into the goal to extend the Silkmen’s lead.
Yeremy Pino scored in the 90th minute to pull one back for Palace after a very-well taken free kick, but no other big chance would come for the travelling team.
Former Macclesfield player and brother of a Manchester United legend, John Rooney, managed his side to victory in what is the biggest win in the club’s history since they reformed in 2020.
Oliver Glasner’s job may be under scrutiny after this match as The Eagles are winless in nine games, especially when the reigning champions after been on the receiving end of an embarrassing loss.
Whilst all The Silkmen fans will be celebrating a monumental victory, they will be anticipating the fourth round draw, which takes place on Monday night, to see who they will face next in the competition.
