The second tier of English football has been preparing for its third set of fixtures this week after witnessing the last games of 2025 and the first of 2026.

However, three particular games on the 4th January have not commenced which has been a shock for fans who have travelled to attend the action.

League One have been in a similar boat with four games being postponed, along with League Two as only two matches have been played with the other 10 being cancelled.

Here are the three Championship contests that have been postponed which have spread frustration for spectators.

Sheffield United vs Oxford United

In the battle between 16th and 23rd in the table, Sheffield United were hoping to make it three successive wins, while Oxford United wanted to bounce back from two consecutive defeats.

The fixture was set to take place at Bramall Lane at 12pm, but the referee was called this morning to find out that certain areas of the pitch were frozen.

The referee inspected the pitch to see if it was playable as it raised plenty of concerns with two hours before kick-off.

With a certain area of the pitch still frozen, the referee deemed there to be a player safety concern and opted to call off the fixture at 10am.

Portsmouth vs Ipswich Town

An intriguing matchup was set for 3pm as relegation-battling Pompey faced the promotion-battling Tractor Boys.

Fratton Park had been a victim of the overnight temperatures hitting below freezing which had caused concern for the upcoming match.

The referee for the game made an inspection at 11am to see if the pitch was safe enough to play on.

Despite having frost covers laid over the pitch since Friday, the referee made the call to postpone the match as it was deemed unplayable.

Hull City vs Watford

A fight for play-off contention was in preparation as both The Tigers and The Hornets were sat in the top six, hoping to rise further up the table.

The match was set to take place at 3pm and seemed to be in a promising position as the pitch looked playable and didn’t seem to have any player safety risks or concerns.

However, the problem was the surrounding areas of the pitch were frozen as the staff were trying to do their best to improve the conditions.

Unfortunately, less than 30 minutes before kick-off, the game was postponed as player safety was not guaranteed due to the surrounding areas of the playing surface.
