On-loan Manchester United Marcus Rashford scored two goals on his Champions League debut, as Barcelona beat Newcastle United at a lively St James Park in their opening game of this campaign.

To purely annoy me, UEFA have introduced the Champions League on Thursday. Mr Ceferin, this isn’t the EUROPA League that gets broadcast on Channel Five we’re talking about here, this is the premier competition of European football.

Anywho, that rant over, let’s take a minute to applaud Marcus Rashford, the 27-year-old forward who is on loan at Barcelona from Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Just like last season, Rashford found his chances at Old Trafford this term limited and opted for a move away. No clubs, it appeared, were calling, but then came five-time European Cup winners FC Barcelona.

Anyone in their right mind would jump at such a chance. To do it on a cold night in Burnley is not a challenge that needs to be overcome. No, look to go to the San Memez, in a warmer climate (hehe).

Having said that, when Rashford went to Levante, he struggled and was hooked off by boss Hansi Flick before the match ended. That would have no doubt hurt and the stinging criticism from newspaper outlets like Marca and Mundo Deportivo.

Such is fate. If teenage sensation Yamine Yamal were playing, maybe the England man wouldn’t score those two well-taken goals. That is an issue for another day, as far as last night is concerned, Marcus Rashford appears to have silenced some critics.
