Michael Van Gerwen finally claimed major title glory for 2025 after winning the World Series Finals.
It’s the sixth time that MVG has won this competition, winning his last tournament just two years ago.
The 36-year-old did not have an easy journey heading into the final, defeating some of the toughest to perform this year.
‘The Green Machine’ may have picked up momentum to contest for more trophies, especially with the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and the World Championship occurring later in 2025.
MVG’s run to success
Van Gerwen’s title-winning journey began in the first round when he faced fellow Dutchman, Wessel Nijman.
The Boxtel-born player just edged through to the next round, triumphing 6-5 as well as earning a match average of 104.75.
Mighty Mike’s contest would be an even narrower contest, going toe-to-toe with the #9 ranked, Rob Cross.
Once again, in a very close match, Van Gerwen succeeded with a 6-5 win to see him proceed to the Quarterfinals on Sunday.
In the last eight of the World Series Finals, MVG took on world #1, Luke Humphries. A matchup which has occurred in many big stages.
It was a thumping battle that saw Van Gerwen win 10-5 and achieve an incredible average of 106.45.
Into the Semifinals, the Vlijmen resident faced 2025 World Cup of Darts winner, Josh Rock, who was on an impressive run throughout the year.
But, the former World Champion showed why he was one of the best to ever do it in the sport, defeating the 24-year-old 11-6 and placing himself into the final.
Of course, it was none other than Luke Littler who would be Van Gerwen’s opponent in the finale.
The Dutchman suffered multiple defeats to ‘The Nuke’ in the Premier League, while losing to the 18-year-old in the World Championship final at the start of the year.
However, MVG would be the victorious one in this rivalry, defeating Littler 11-7 to clinch the title in Amsterdam.
With a truly perfect win in the Netherlands, Van Gerwen lifted his trophy in front of his home fans, hoping to gain more title triumph for the rest of the year.
