In the last 10 years or so, one can count on one hand the number of mistakes Liverpool have made in the transfer market. I am arguing, especially in Jürgen Klopp’s tenure, that it’s just one.
Liverpool have made one signing, and it hasn’t turned out well; that signing was Uruguayan Darwin Nunez. After one season, this is a harsh conclusion to come to.
This isn’t my assumption, it’s theirs, those at the top at Liverpool, the ones who make decisions about players incoming and outgoing.
Richard Hughes and Julian Ward have made some exceptional signings since their partnership.
Although they have got a lot of their signings right, the duo have instructed the Anfield hierarchy to cut their losses and sell the Uruguayan striker Nunez for a fee in the region of £46.2 million to al-Hilal, with potential add-ons taking the deal to £56.6 million.
Frederico Chiesa was another player who hasn’t performed to the expected level, but with the very low transfer fee he came for, there’s a bit of leeway for The Reds to get that signing wrong.
Let’s put it this way: in the past 10 years, this is one of the wrong signings Liverpool has made. In the past 10 years, the signing of Bruno Fernandes is one of the right signings that they have made.
Just give that a thought.
