Xander Zayas earned the biggest win of his career at just 22 years old, capturing the WBO World Light-Middleweight title.
The undefeated fighter’s title glory took place on Saturday at Madison Square Garden where he challenged Jorge Garcia Perez for the vacant belt.
The San Juan-born boxer went the distance with the Mexican, earning a dominant unanimous decision win in New York.
The Puerto Rican was only 17 when he made his professional debut. Five years later, he’s become the king of the 154-pound division.
Zayas praised his mother in the post-fight interview, believing that she was the main reason for making this dream happen.
“My mom is my hero,” Zayas said. “She always told me I was going to be a world champion and she made everything happen, [made] everything possible. We moved out of Puerto Rico to chase that dream and it’s finally here at 22.”
The Light-Middleweight division is stacked with contenders and keen challengers for the throne as the new champion is prepared to defend his title.
““Anybody in the division can get it now,” Zayas said. “There’s no running. I’m a world champion, and I have what they want.”
