Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers have named former player Russell Martin their new Head Coach on a three-year deal. The former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton player joins The Gers, a week after the club completed a takeover deal with the American’s who own the San Francisco 49ers.

Russell, 39, with Scottish roots through his father, is famed for playing attacking, high-intensity football. Some observers think that Russell Martin’s style of play is not too dissimilar to that of former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

Whatever his style, Martin has some big shoes to fill. Rangers are undoubtedly a big club, covered in history and prestige. The 39-year-old, although young, is a very talented operator.

In his last job, arguably against the odds, he got Southampton back in the Premier League. Arguably, in the Premier League, Russell Martin was a bit naive, which was not too dissimilar to now Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany. Davide Ancelotti, Steven Gerrard, Brian Priske, formerly of Feyenoord, and Francesco Farioli, formerly of Ajax, were linked with the role.
