After Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Manchester United fans have had few and far reasons to celebrate. Two League Cups, and two FA Cups and a Europa League in a 12-year period for some clubs might be a respectable trophy haul, but not for Man United.
The Red Devils under the legendary Scott were always eating at the top European football. In Sir Alex’s reign it was only The Ritz that would do. Since Fergie’s retirement however, Manchester United have been more KFC and McDonalds rather than Michelin.
Before you get defensive about me taking aim at American fast food chains, know that it’s more of a slant at United, the standards have really dropped, ironically in the catering department is one area which is affected.
Ever since the Glazer family took over, things have been gradually getting worse, but the cracks have been papered by the brilliance of Sir Alex Ferguson, who was able to inspire some very poor Man United teams to glory.
Since Fergie’s retirement however, there has been a decline at a ferocious speed of knots, that’s left football observers shell shocked. From no Premier League titles, to then being content with Champions League qualification, to then qualifying for Europa League, with the hope of winning it, so they can get back into the Champions League.
The decline has been fast. After Wednesday’s chastening defeat, Man U are now at an all-time low. Can it get any lower? The Red Devils finished 16th in the Premier League!
Not since 1974, have United been anywhere near as bad as this. The decline of one of Europe’s biggest clubs has been dramatic, but the rise (yes I am hopeful).
In reality, some very dark times await United fans. If you think this is bad, you haven’t seen nothing yet!
