After biding his time coaching Real Madrid’s Under-14 ‘s, and Real Sociedad’s youth team, former Liverpool manager Xabi Alonso. was able to make his mark at German giants Bayer Leverkusen, as they pipped perennial Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich to the title.
Key to that win was players such as Victor Boniface, Jerome Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and several others. Key to that impressive season was that from 1-11, the Bayer team was a hardworking one.
Their team unity and never say die attitude was something to be admired. As a reward for the Spaniard Alonso’s good work in Germany, he has become the new Real Madrid manager, replacing the legendary Carlo Ancelotti.
With becoming the new manager of Los Blancos, Alonso gets the chance to work with world class talent in the shape of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe.
In the case of France captain Mbappe, much has been made of how he would integrate into Xabi Alonso’s system. The former Leverkusen coach, is infamous of course of instilling discipline into his teams. As good as they’re offensively, they’re good defensively.
For that to effectively work, it requires defensive work from the home team. In the case of Mbappe, Vini Junior and Bellingham, all three are good in the attacking area of the pitch, but not necessarily the best at the other end.
New right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold although terrible, isn’t the best looking back. The need to mention this at point was that despite Real Madrid’s talented squad, they’re going to end the season trophyless.
It will be a challenge for the former Spanish midfielder, but at the same time if anyone can take Real Madrid forward into the new era, there’s not many better than Xabi Alonso.
