After going on a winless run of nine games, which also included them failing to score, with inevitability, it was confirmed that yesterday, 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City have been relegated to the Championship.

This is their second relegation to England’s second tier in three seasons. Unlike the first time they were relegated, on this occasion, the writing seemed on the wall.

Former manager Steve Cooper, formerly of East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest, started the season as manager of The Foxes after championship-winning manager Enzo Maresca fell for the charms of Chelsea, even before a ball was kicked this season.

Cooper did a respectable job at The King Power Stadium to his credit. Ok, they were no Bournemouth, but they didn’t seem to be involved in matters at the lower ends of the table.

So it came as a surprise when the Leicester board sacked Steve Cooper and brought in Ruud Van Nistelrooy. I won’t backtrack on my words, which were basically endorsing the appointment of the former PSV boss.

In theory, it should have been a shrewd appointment, like Brendan Rodgers’, but it didn’t work out this way. Reportedly, Ruud wasn’t happy with the lack of investment in the playing squad.

Whether that’s true or not appears to be seen, but The Foxes seemed a bit light for the Premier League, not at the required level. A harsh assessment, I admit, but their 19th-place position in the Premier League isn’t a lie either.

So, it’s going to be a long summer for Leicester, which will be looking for yet another manager. I am not sure if Man City has any coaches who are looking to become managers.

If they do, Leicester will be on it, no doubt. One man they could give a call to is former Southampton boss Russell Martin if you can think of any other names, answer on a postcard and send it to the Leicester City football stadium.
