The goings-on at Manchester United are not too different from those of the past. When the Glazer family was in control of more pitch matters, such as footballing matters (the signings of players and stadium maintenance), they were criticised for not handling the situation well.
What would they do in response? Well, nothing. Then, all of a sudden, the transfer window comes, and they splash millions of United’s cash on player transfers and wages.
All is well with the world again; that’s what they want you to believe, but deep down, the world of Manchester United is still the same. So, when it was announced that Sir Jim Radcliffe would take a minority stake in The Red Devils, it was hoped there would be a new dawn.
Sadly, however, since the Ineos owner has been in charge, his time has been littered with controversy. From job cuts to Sir Alex Ferguson-scale job cuts, the new ownership that deals with the football side of Man United has tried to go for what some deemed to be the tried-and-tested model.
That tried-and-tested model? Well, it’s to sell the fanbase a fantasy and a feel-good dream. This ownership can’t do that by saying there’s going to be an influx of signings; no FFP has put an end to that.
The ownership has opted to sell fans the dream of a new stadium. Yeah, I have just stopped laughing myself. Manchester United executives are trying to convince football that they plan to move to a new stadium within the next 10 years.
This football team, which many branded as the best in the world, is a far cry from that. A new stadium? Not in my lifetime, and I am still a spring chicken at 38. Nice try, but you’re not fooling this Man United fan.
