Newcastle United have ended their 70-year trophy drought after they defeated Premier League leaders Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final, courtesy of goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak. The Magpies went into this one having lost the League Cup final two seasons prior to Man United.

Eddie Howe’s men went into this game determined to end their trophy drought, which stretches back to 1955, when they won the FA Cup. Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who were taken all the way to penalties against PSG in midweek, had no answer and were no match for the rampant Magpies.

It was no surprise when Dan Burn, a local lad, opened the scoring for his home club. That was supposed to be the goal that got The Mighty Reds back competing in the contest, but it didn’t turn out that way, as leading scorer Isak doubled their lead.

The match seemed over at that point, but this is Liverpool we’re talking about, so write them off at your peril. Federico Chiesa did pull a late goal back, but it proved too little too late.

It’s been challenging work for The Reds. Having been in contention for three trophies at the start of the week, they now are in contention for just one. Surely they won’t blow all three?
