Overall, it was a good night for English teams in tonight’s Champions League matches, as Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Manchester City all won their games. Six-time winners Liverpool, who were top of the new-format table, suffered their first campaign defeat, a 3-2 reverse against PSV.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal beat new boys Girona 2-1, who are now out of the competition. Unai Emery’s Aston Villa arguably were involved in the game of the day as they beat Celtic 4-2 at Villa Park, which included a Morgan Rogers hat-trick.
In a night filled with drama, there was a period when Man City, winners of this competition two seasons ago, were on the verge of going out, especially when they were trailing Belgian giants 1-0.
Pep Guardiola’s side recovered and powered to a 3-1 win. Despite this win, City have not been able to mask a poor campaign. As a result of a disappointing Champions League campaign so far, they have set themselves up for a play-off tie with Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
Los Blancos prepared for that potential clash with a solid win against Champions League debutants Brest. Fellow French side Lille, who automatically qualified for a last-16 spot, were the night’s biggest winners, sweeping aside Dutch champions Feyenoord 6-1.
