A superb century from Hobart Hurricanes opener Mitch Owen helped Hobart win their first BBL title by seven wickets. The 23-year-old, opening the batting with the slightly more experienced Caleb Jewell, whacked a 42-ball 108.
In his astonishing innings, Mitch Owen hit six fours and eleven monster sixes. Nathan Ellis’ Hurricanes won the toss and elected to put the opposition, Sydney Thunder, into bat.
The decision early doors looked to be a doomed one. Jason Sangha (67) and David Warner (48) combined to put on 97 for the first wicket. Concerning partnerships, that was as good as it got for Warner’s men.
Wickets were falling at a steady rate, but at the end of the 20 overs, the Sydney Thunder posted 182-7, a potentially competitive score. When the 23-year-old Mitch Owen came out to bat, however, he seemed determined to make a mockery of that score total.
Owen succeeded in that. The Hobart Hurricanes opener didn’t do it all himself; the home side was indebted to a crucial stand between the experienced pair of Ben McDermott (18 off 12) and Matthew Wade (32 off 17 balls).
