Defending World Test Champions Australia will have the chance to defend their crown, Defending World Test Champions Australia will have the chance to defend their crown, where they will face South Africa at Lords after a six-wicket win over India at the SCG.

Winning the toss, stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah opted to bat first. The decision appeared to be a doomed one.

Bar Bumrah’s heroics on more occasions than not, one wonders if this test series would have ended sooner. The veteran seamer kept his side in the hunt and helped last year’s beaten finalists be in contention for another final.

The equation is simple: beat Australia in the fifth, retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and a place in the final. In a familiar story throughout the series, India’s batters struggled greatly, and this game’s first innings was no different.

Rishabh Pant (40), Ravi Jadeja (26), and skipper Bumrah (22) were the three top scorers in this innings, which tells the story as the tourists were all out for 185. In reply, Australia fell short of restoring parity as they were all out for 181.

Debutant Beau Webster (57) and Steve Smith (33) were the players to have scored any runs of note. India, with a lead of four at the start of their second innings, fared worse the second time around than they did the first time round.

Regular captain Rohit Sharma was dropped for this game due to his form. Bar Rishabh Pant (40 in the first innings and 61 in the second), no other batsmen contributed enough.

To be fair, Jaiswal was superb in 2024, but he had a difficult time in this game.

The tourists were shot out for just 157 the second time around, and the last four wickets fell for 16 runs. That meant that Australia, to take a decisive 3-1 lead, which would book their place in the World Test Championship final, would need to chase 161 to win.

In theory, it was a small total, which got even smaller when it was confirmed that India’s star bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, couldn’t bowl in the second innings. Despite this advantage, the supporting cast, namely Prasidh Krishna (3-65), tried to make a game of it for his country, but crucially, KKR wasn’t as economical as Bumrah would be.

Despite the wobble that Krishna’s wickets caused, Australia won this one at a canter in 27 overs. This defeat for India threatens to send shockwaves that are more than just not qualifying for the World Test Championship final. they will face South Africa at Lords, after a six-wicket win over India at the SCG.
