Redknapp, Pochettino, Mourinho, Nuno, and Conte are the names of the Tottenham managers who have taken charge of the club in recent history. There is one name to add to that illustrious list of football managers: former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.
I am one for satire, but putting the Australian’s name as a manager with pedigree is justified. The fact that he managed The Hoops will be used as a stick to beat him. It’s. It’s Celtic, and my Gran can manage them, which will undoubtedly be what the one filled with cynicism will say.
The Scottish giants needed coaching, and when the former Socceroos manager came to Celtic Park, the season before, they were miles off the pace as Glasgow rivals Rangers won Scottish title number 55.
Ange’s last season in Scotland saw him win The Treble. Many Celtic fans knew this was the beginning of the end. Like Brendan Rodgers before him, he took Celtic to their domestic pinnacle.
There was no higher than Glasgow Celtic could read. Postecoglou opted for pasture new and took the Tottenham job. Although not the first name many would have thought of, Big Ange has a strong personality and has won trophies wherever he has gone.
Because it was in his homeland, Japan or Scotland, he could only produce the goods where he was, which he had done. But Tottenham is a different challenge altogether.
Famous managers have come and gone. Messers Mourinho and Conte are arguably amongst the best in Europe, but ‘Box Office’ has failed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
So, with Ange Postecoglou currently struggling, is it surprising? No, I am not insulting the former Celtic boss. Rather, I am saying the club’s toxicity is deep-rooted, and it seems whoever is hired will fail.
