He started as Joachim Low’s assistant, and just like other assistant managers, they want to break free and be managers in their own right. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.
Managers like Brian Kid, for example, or even the late Sammy Lee, come to mind. Management isn’t for everyone. Sports fans, I want to mention another name and add it to the conversation: Hansi Flick.
Flick is a former German assistant coach, manager, and head coach for Bayern Munich. During his time with Bayern at The Allianz Arena, he won everything that was there to win for The Bavarians.
His time in Germany was generally considered a success. But given how Flick got his sides to play and managed the side, the 59-year-old felt burnt out and left Bayern Munich.
Hansi Flick harboured ambitions of being a national coach, and when his country came calling. Naturally, he was going to answer the call. It takes a brave man not to.
Sadly for Die Mannschaft and their manager at the time, this wasn’t a good match, and Flick became the first manager to be sacked in German history. After some time out and the sacking of Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona were after his services, and Hansi would join The Catalans.
After a good start to life at Camp Nou, this past month or two have been a real struggle. There have been shocking defeats, but the most recent defeat against Atletico Madrid arguably hurt the most.
Hansi Flick is a very attacking manager. The 59-year-old German reminds me of the way the Argentinian great Diego Maradona set up his native La Albiceleste. When they were good, they were sensational, but when they were bad, they couldn’t be the Under-13 team.
After all is said and done, did you know that Xavi Hernandez and Hansi Flick have the same number of points at this stage of the season? I didn’t think you did.
But there you have it: one manager is painted as a Spaniard tired and worn out from a few seasons with Barcelona, and the other is a freshish face, one of which has recovered from a lousy sacking with his native Germany.
Barcelona is third after this, and people will question whether Flick was the right decision, but Barca fans will hope they will Flick through the bad parts of the story they’re going through now.
Oh, yes, that was pun intended.
