Good morning, sports fans. I pray you’re well and in good health. As you (readers of this site) are aware, I am a Manchester United fan.
As a Man United fan, I am often asked for my opinion on current United affairs. Currently, nothing is more current than The Red Devils hiring Ruben Amorim.
Former Benfica midfielder and Portugal international is 39 years old, the same age as former Man United legend Ronaldo. The two men were international teammates.
In the case of CR7, even non-football fans are aware of the man’s stature and how much he has achieved. With the case of Amorim, many might not have heard of him—only the avid football fans and fans in Portugal. Don’t worry; I will give you a brief timeline of his achievements (Ruben Amorim) and then offer my insight into the former Lisbon coach’s appointment.
The story of Ruben Amorim starts at Braga. Young and arguably unprepared for pressure-cooker management, the young Amorim lost his first match. For most managers, losing is catastrophic, but the former Sporting Lisbon coach said if he failed again, he would quit.
Many games later, Ruben didn’t lose his next match when the rookie manager won a League Cup with Braga. This achievement was noticed, and some of the big sides were ladled to sniff around in Portugal.
Sporting Lisbon, which is no Porto or Benfica but is still a top dog in the Primera Liga, snapped up Amorim, and they agreed to a compensation package, too. Some in the football world argued this was a bit of a risk due to his lack of experience as a manager.
Like he did at Braga, though, the 39-year-old Amorim enjoyed success. He won the Primera Liga twice in the Portuguese capital, ending a 19-year title drought in the process.
