Sir Jim Radcliffe will have to start finding a sporting director, and Dan Ashworth is now being shown the door. Paul Mitchell could come in and replace Ashworth.

Such an appointment is very unlikely, it appears, as Newcastle have already given Manchester United one director of football to give two to their nearest rivals. It’s highly unlikely, however bad the relationship between Mitchell and Howe.

Another mentioned was Man City’s outgoing director of football, Tixi Begiristain, but such an appointment would be highly controversial
