Coventry City have sacked manager Mark Robins after seven years at the club. The former Man United striker, famous for helping Sir Alex win his first FA Cup trophy, had been at the club for seven years.
In that time, The Sky Blues, after enjoying the highlife of the Premier League, drifted further and further into the abyss after suffering consecutive relegations. Robins came for a second spell after a one-season stint with the club in 2012-13.
Coventry was in the fourth tier of English football and in financial turmoil. Groundsharing was needed after the uncertainty of the club’s future. What fans could feel rest assured about was that their former manager was there when they were at the near bottom.
The former Scunthorpe and Barnsley manager won the EFL Trophy soon after joining in March 2017 and won the League One title in 2019-2020. Under Mark Robins, the club were climbing up the ladder, and the good times, the times of the Premier League seemed close, but last season, Coventry would face more play-off heartache.
This time, Luton Town, who had gone on a dissimilar journey to Coventry, would beat them in the play-off final.
Why the owners felt the time was now
This is an insensitive question, and only the owners can honestly know why. From the outside looking in, The Sky Blues have brought in some fresh faces to replace players such as Callum O’Hare and Gustavo Hamer, so the expectation was for Coventry to kick on after last season’s near miss in the championship and FA Cup against Manchester United.
With the International break approaching, teams tend to take stock and reevaluate their options. With Coventry in 17th place, seven points off the pace, and their form indifferent, the owners clearly feel that in a League as competitive as this one, the time for change is now.
Is it the right decision?
In short, no, I don’t think so. Mark Robbins has brought a real sense of optimism back to the club; he’s got them dreaming again. It’s a call made in haste. The Championship is a tough league, and there is no doubt that other clubs have Premier League aspirations, too.
Time will tell if I am right or not. Famously, when Southampton got rid of Nigel Adkins, they brought in a guy named Pochettino, and look how that turned out.
Potential replacements
So that leaves us with the question of $1 million: who will replace the 54-year-old? David Moyes could be one, as the Scot left his job at West Ham, but would the former Everton boss step down a league to join the club?
Another option is Frank Lampard, and I think if offered the position, the former Chelsea and Everton boss would take it.
