Pakistan spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali helped spin the home side to a much-needed win, which also ended their 11-test winless run. Chasing 297 to win on a pitch that was giving plenty of assistance to the spinners, England, although they came out swinging, fell well short.
The tourists would fall to 144 all out in 33.3 overs, which meant they fall short of their target by 155 runs. In the first innings, Khan (7-111) tormented Ben Stokes’ side with his off-spin, and in the second, Ali’s career-best 8-58 helped Shaan Masood’s side get back into this test series.
Ben Stokes (37), Ollie Pope (22), and Brydon Carse (27) were the only players to have made any telling contribution. England has been down this familiar road before, one where they have been outfoxed by a slow left-arm bowler.
Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath is famous among several other bowlers in this category. Kamran Ghulam, who hit a century on debut, was key to this win, as was Salman Ali Agha, whose importance in the side is growing.
Next up for the two sides is Rawalpindi on Thursday, 23rd October.
