They say no news is good news, but in this instance, is it really? After a desperate start to the season, the Manchester United boss is again a man under a lot of pressure—not just a bit, but a whole heap of pressure.
The 50-year-old, former manager of Ajax, has struggled in his role as Man United boss. Winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, I argue papers over part of the cracks and hide the struggles faced at United.
Just like Louis Van Gaal and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before him, Manchester United has regressed at an alarming rate after an initial season of progression. In Erik Ten Haag’s first season, Man United finished third, but in the following season, they finished eighth!
That’s some drop-off! But he has had players injured, but this and that. Dear reader, this Manchester United team is as close as he wanted to the team. Jose, for example, had players that the board didn’t sign for him, and I am sure Van Gaal would have been the same.
Ten Haag is working with a huge chunk of Ajax’s 2019 side, which is like a reunion tour. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Harry Redknapp, for example, works with the same player at several different clubs, but when it comes to the struggles of some of these players, such as Anthony, the rope is nearly run out. There’s only so much empathy one can have.
On the whole, the Dutchman has kept faith with a player who seemed to be overrated by the bright lights of Old Trafford. There is a player in there, but Ten Haag has yet to be able to get him out of his shell.
The same can be said with Sancho, too. There are other examples of players who have gone on to fare better when playing elsewhere, but the fact remains the same. Manchester United are not doing anyone any favours by not clarifying the manager’s situation.
Erik Ten Haag needs the assurance that he’s being backed, and the players need to know who is the captain of the ship. Since Sir Alex left in 2013, there have been David Moyes, Ryan Giggs (interim), Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Ragnick (interim), and now Erik Ten Haag.
If I am still as good with numbers as I once was, I make the seven managers in the best 12 seasons. Chelsea, you have moved based down the M1, haven’t you? This stat of managerial appointment is something the West London club is accustomed to, not United.
Nowadays, it’s not physically possible for a coach to stay for 20 seasons or more, but in the case of Klopp and Guardiola, arguably two of the best managers in the current Premier League era, they have been in their respective jobs for the best part of a decade.
This is necessary because if Manchester United were back, as many fans desperately want them to be, they would need a manager who is backed and allowed to work on his plan.
The thing is, ETH has been given the backing (the players and a transfer fund of £600 million and what seems to be and counting). Both the manager and fans have suffered enough. Clarity, please.
If he’s getting sacked, Mr. So and So is coming in. If he’s not getting sacked, then say Erik Ten Haag is staying at United, and we will look to do this, this, and this to ensure things improve for him.
