Babar Azam has resigned as ODI and T20 captain of Pakistan, as confirmed by the man himself on Twitter. Azam, 29, had guided Pakistan to a T20 final in his first spell as captain in 2022 and also got the 2009 winners to a semi-final in his stint as captain in the tournament previous.

Pakistan have confirmed that Shaan Masood will take over Babar’s white-ball captaincy duties, just like he did in test cricket. Although he is seen as a visionary, Yorkshire captain Masood has struggled to live in Test captaincy.

Mohammed Rizwan or Saud Shakeel should have been considered. Appointing Shaan Masood is too short-term. Other players should have been considered, especially since the white-ball formats in Pakistan are better.

The 36-year-old has not been in the ODI T20 squads of late.
