Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic beat Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets (7-6, 6-2) to become an Olympic Gold Medalist for the first time in his career. Novak has won everything there is to win in the sport but was missing Gold in his stellar collection of trophies.
On Sunday evening, however, this would be something that the former world number one was determined to address. Last month at Wimbledon SW19, the young Spaniard Alcaraz outplayed the Serbian Djokovic, and on this occasion, the 37-year-old would get his revenge and his hands on the ultimate prize.
Whereas I don’t think Novak Djokovic will be retiring for a couple of seasons just yet, it’s a fitting end to win Gold. With all due respect to the 37-year-old former world number one, this will be his last Olympics and what a way to go out.
