After suffering a chastening defeat at Wimbledon to him, seven-time Wimbledon champion and former world number one Novak Djokovic will have one thing on his mind, if not two things when he faces Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.
In two days, yes it will be the Olympic final, but it will also be another chapter of a fascinating rivalry. The way feat had it, this rivalry will be on the shorter side, due to Novak being dare I say towards the twilight of his career and Alcaraz, ‘s being at the start.
At Wimbledon last month, the final was a mismatch. The Serb patched himself up and defied the odds to play at SW19, never mind getting to the final. Against other players, with respect, Novak was able to manage, but Carlos Alcaraz is more than just any other player.
At Wimbledon, it’s quite something for me to say this, but the young Spaniard wiped the floor with his more illustrious opponent, by winning in straight sets. On Sunday, it won’t be as easy.
Novak Djokovic won his semi-final rematch against Italian Musseti 6-4-,6-2 comprehensively as did Alcaraz who won his semi-final against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 6-1.
This final promises to be a classic. Novak Djokovic will be aiming to win the only crown he hasn’t won (Olympic Gold) and Carlos Alcaraz will be trying to enhance his ever-increasing reputation.
Surely destiny is written for Novak? Not if Carlos can help it.
